It was a draw. You can disagree all you want, but when it comes to how it affected the voters, it was a draw.
See, here’s the thing. Joe-ker Biden laughing his way through the debate while Paul Ryan dealt well with a moderator cutting him off made for a fantastic debate. I have made it a point to try and be as neutral as possible while watching these so I can deal with what comes out of their mouths. I guess that’s the journalism training in me, but whatever. If I had to pick a winner… I’m not sure I could, but I think Ryan had the upper hand longer.
The laughing, snorting, eye-rolling Biden did not help. Had he been confrontational without all that, he would not have come across as so condescending and that undecided tracker on CNN clearly showed he lost popularity. However, this debate wasn’t so much about the independents and the undecideds. It may have been at first, but with such a heavy foreign policy focus, most people tuned out. I am fairly certain the high female undecided support came from them muting the debate and just watching him talk. He is a dreamy dude, you know.
Fact-wise, that will get torn to pieces. I am not going to go into that. My focus with these is presentation, and both had an all right one. I think Biden was a bit weaker, but I know plenty who are more left-leaning than me who think that of Ryan.
What really bothers me is the content of the questions, however. Marth Raddatz interrupted Ryan many times to change subjects when he was making a point. The questions she asked, though, were largely terrible. Starting with thirty minutes of foreign policy, which is not a deciding factor this election (sorry to those of you outraged over Libya), talking about security cuts and asking a question about abortion? Those have no place here.
I will say this, and I know that my conservative friends are going to dismiss me completely, but let me take a deep breath before I say this.
ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE. ABORTION IS NOT AN ISSUE.
My God, people. Stop with the social stuff. It has no place in this election. Biden won that part of the debate.
Okay. Deep breaths. Back on track.
This debate was a draw. I’m already arguing with friends about it. There is no way the country is going to be so eager to declare a winner like they were in the first presidential debate. The town hall debate is next. I’m still hoping for a Gangnam Style flashmob. Make my dreams come true, America.
